Santos Leija - ACB's Volunteer of the Month

Santos Leija was nominated by St. Louis the King School principal Jane Daigle. She writes," Over the past six years, Mr. Leija has become an indispensable member of our school community. He has taken on the responsibility of coordinating all of our playground aides. He was a member of our School Board for three years, serving as the Chairperson of our Safety Committee. He also generously contributes to the school's numerous charity drives and has often taken it upon himself to purchase lunches for children who arrive at school without one. Last year when one of our teachers was going through treatment for cancer, Mr. Leija joyfully accepted the opportunity to help out in her classroom as an aide - all of the while continuing with his other duties at the school.
"Mr. Leija's proficiency in both English and Spanish has given our school the ability to reach out to its Hispanic population. He assists new families through the registration process, he arrives at school an hour early each day to help our Spanish speaking families get answers to their questions; he sits in on parent/teacher conferences as an interpreter to ensure parents fully understand their children's progress and challenges, and he edits all of our documentation that is translated from English in Spanish to ensure the intended message remains true.
"To fully understand the heart of this man, you must realize that Mr. Leija has built his life on a foundation of service to others. He enlisted in the Army in 1961, earning numerous commendations and serving with great honor before retiring in 1987. For years he and his son owned Outback Boxing Gym where he offered a free educational program to kids teaching them athletic skills and discipline. That program earned many commendations and was supported by the Glendale Police Department. Mr. Leija is currently a member of the American legion, serving on various committees and participating in numerous Legion sponsored events.
"The students of St. Louis the King love 'Mr. Santos' and know he is someone they can count on to watch out for their best interest. From the simple things, such as making sure a kindergartner's shoes are tied or warming up one of our teams until their coach arrives, Mr. Leija takes on every duty with a single-minded desire to see our school be the best and safest it can be.
"We are truly blessed to have this man in our lives and in the lives of our children."

School Days for Wilhelm Automotive

What does automotive care and maintenance have to do with every school subject that an eighth grade class has studied during the school year? Almost everything as the students at Sonoran Heights Elementary School in Surprise found out recently when they received a visit from personnel from Wilhelm Automotive. Ben Williams, Surprise Store Manager, and Phil Gordon, Marketing Manager, spoke to the students about how subjects such as math, science, geography and social studies can tie in with the automotive industry.
Math topics included questions from the students about the difference in purchasing, repairing and financing different cars and trucks. Science questions explored how vehicles work and the difference in technology and parts in older vehicles versus newer vehicles. The students wondered why vehicles from certain countries were better than others and also cost more to repair. This topic helped them to better understand geography and their study of different cultures and how it affects economics and importing.
Ben and Phil agreed that it was gratifying to see how the students realized that everything that they learned during the school year really can be applied to real world jobs in the future.

Wellness Tip
Our children grow up in a culture that believes the answer to every problem is a drug. Kids learn more from what we do than what we say. Let's set a good example by making healthy decisions about the physical, biochemical and psychological dimensions of life. For more information visit www.lpchiropractic.com and www.icpa4kids.org .
