As of this writing, our youngest child, Alexander Joseph (Joe), is in basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. Communication so far has been limited to one 20-second phone call permitting him to dictate his mailing address. David and I know he has been dealing with the aftermath of a hurricane, but somehow we know he is fine. We had anticipated that Joe would be reporting for duty in November, but we had 72-hours notice over the Labor Day weekend that his departure would be Tuesday September 2. Nevertheless, we deconstructed his civilian existence (apartment, car, etc.) and he was on the plane with his fellow "shippers" and on his way as scheduled to a new life beyond our anxious eyes.

Many years ago, I experienced another departure when my then-fiancé was drafted and whisked away. However, the country in general was not behind his decision to obey the order to report. I am so grateful that times have changed, and our service men and women have greater support from the public and country they are voluntarily serving.

Joe is thrilled to be a part of the Air Force, and is excited at the prospect of gaining knowledge, experience, and maturity. As his mother, I am simply grateful that he has the chance to realize his dream. His dad and I worry quietly and often, but we are mostly proud of Joe, and hopeful that he finds what so many people do not these days - a reason to strive for higher goals and ways to make a real difference.

Jon Richardson Enjoying Retirement

Jon Richardson recently retired as executive director of the Peoria Diamond Club. He says, "There were so many pluses about my time with the Peoria Diamond Club, but my greatest pleasure was in getting to know the volunteers. They are an amazingly diversified and experienced group. There's a lot of famous people wearing red shirts and making a day at the ballpark a truly fine experience."

He explains, "The Peoria Diamond Club provides operational support for the spring training of the Seattle Mariners and the San Diego Padres at the Peoria Sports Complex. I had the pleasure of watching the club grow from an initial 220 volunteers to more than 650."

Besides his work with the Peoria Diamond Club, Jon had a career that included sports talk radio, and acting as the spokesperson for major teams. A gifted public speaker, he spent his professional life in sports and non-profit organizations.

Money earned by the Peoria Diamond Club is donated to help support youth organizations of the West Valley. For more information, call 623-773-8710, or visit www.peoriadiamondclub.org.

Don't Be Fuel-ish

If you can remember gasoline prices below 50 cents a gallon, you are undoubtedly in some state of sticker shock right now. The cost of a gallon of gasoline is a central topic of discussion these days, and with good reason. We depend on our cars to navigate our complex lives.

Automobile maintenance is your best defense against rising fuel prices. For good fuel economy, your car has to be in good repair.

Wilhelm Automotive will make sure your vehicle is in top running condition to help you maximize your mileage. You can stretch your fuel dollars even farther by avoiding aggressive driving such as speeding, rapid acceleration, and quick stops. Experts tell us that each 5 mph over 60 mph on the highway equals 30 cents extra a gallon for gas. So remaining courteous and calm on the road is good for saving gas, and for saving lives.

Regardless of what kind of car or truck you drive, we will be happy to answer your questions. Just email us at info@wilhelmauto.com. To schedule a check-up for your car, call 623-979-3740. Additional information is available at www.wilhelmauto.com.
